As I’m sure the vast T&A readership knows, tonight is Light Up Night in Pittsburgh, the annual kickoff of the holiday season and celebration of local moderately talented performers. I went through this evening’s events listed on downtownpittsburgh.com and present the highlights below as yet another service to you, the vast blah blah blah.
8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Parkvale Savings Bank, Fourth and Wood Street
Customer Appreciation Day
Holiday treats for anyone who comes into the branch, along with gift basket raffles. Winners will be drawn Dec. 19, 2008.
This might be your only opportunity to recoup part of that $700 billion bailout package that you’re paying for, so hurry down for a few packs of instant cocoa in a Parkvale mug.
9 a.m. - Midnight Bessemer Court, Station Square
The Fountain at Bessemer Court Holiday Shows
Hear the sounds of the season set to our spectacular Waltzing Water fountain shows. Shows are at the top of the hour, 20 minutes after and 20 minutes til. This is the final day for the Fountain at the Court until the Spring of 2009.
Waltzing water. Nothing quite captures the excitement and magic of the holiday season like the ¾ time signature. Ommp ba ba, oomp ba ba, oomp ba ba. And what makes tonight’s presentation of the Waltzing Waters extra special is that this is the final day for the fountain until the spring. So it’s like the last day that Kennywood is open, except without all the fun but with a significantly reduced risk of seeing a fat woman’s exposed midriff.
Noon US Steel Plaza
The Pittsburgh Creche Dedication
This nativity scene is an actual replica of the one in St. Peter's Square in Rome, Italy. Be sure to visit Pittsburgh's own symbol of Christmas.
It’s an ACTUAL replica? Really? A genuine knockoff? I’ll be sure to wear my genuine diamelle and 24 karat gold electroplate jewelry.
Noon - 7 p.m. YWCA of Pittsburgh, 305 Wood Street
Light Up Night Holiday Bazaar
Sponsored by YWCA Enterprising Women. Browse creations of fine handmade jewelry and festive handmade greeting cards, holiday floral creations, and learn about catering and cleaning services. Holiday entertainment will be provided to bring laughter and joy to your holiday season.
Yeah, come down and learn about cooking and cleaning because you’re a woman damn it, and we’re the YWCA and know where a woman’s place is!
5:30 - 8 p.m. Rivers Club, 301 Grant Street, Suite 411
Light Up Night at the Rivers Club
We will kick-off Light Up Night with delicious food, a balloon artist, DJ and a night of fun for everyone. (412) 391-5227
Oddly enough, the Duquesne Club is offering the exact same amenities, but instead of a regular balloon artist, the Duke will have a balloon angioplasty artist to better serve their aged membership.
5:30 - 9 p.m. Macy's Downtown Pittsburgh
Light Up Night at Macy's
Join us for a magical family-friendly celebration as we kickoff the holiday season. Enjoy fun activities and music in-store for kids including craft stations with the Pittsburgh Children's Museum. Free gift for all kids ages 12 and under (while supplies last). Also, catch the live performances outside on Smithfield Street beginning at 6:30 p.m., leading up to the countdown to the unveiling of Macy's holiday windows.
“While supplies last.” Translation: they have 10 crappy gifts to give away.
6 & 8 p.m. Main Stage in front of the Hard Rock Cafe, Station Square
"A Whole Lot of Buildin' Goin On!" Starring Bob the Builder
Childhood cartoon favorite, Bob the Builder and his Can-Do Crew, need some help from all the builders for a very special Light Up Night project at Station Square. With a little singing, dancing, building and whole lot of fun, Bob the Builder will make sure the job gets done.
This almost didn’t happen until Neil Bluhm stepped in.
Have fun tonight and bundle up!

You’ve provided an incredible service to your readership.
What? No Billy Price or Joe Gruschecky at Light Up Night??
I was at Bessemer Court most of Friday evening, and I can guarantee you that the fountain was not dancing during the entire time I was there. 9 am - Midnight my arse.
We did see some freight trains, though, so that was cool.
